Gear Review: Cheeky Fishing Spray Fly Reel

Overview

Over the last few weeks, I have been fishing with the new Spray fly reel by Cheeky Fishing. I fish in both salt and freshwater and like my conventional and fly reels to be capable in both environments. The Spray fly reel has a fully sealed drag system protecting its internals.  It is super smooth and feels great in hand. I especially appreciate the hook keeper built in near the foot of the reel. Maybe now I can spare the fighting butts on my rods the acupuncture treatment. Overall it is a well-designed fly reel. I am excited to take it out and get on some bull reds in the marsh.

Specs

Pros and Cons

Pros:

1.      The Spray 450 is the lightest 4.5” arbor reel that I own. It only weighs 9.4oz.

2.      It can carry a mile of backing on it.

3.      The gasket drag system is completely sealed. I fish in fresh and saltwater. All the reels I own are bought with the harshest conditions I plan to put them in in mind. There is no harsher environment than saltwater.

4.      The Spray 450 is sized to handle 12 weight lines. The heaviest rod I am running with right now is a 10wt. I got the TFO BC Big Fly to chase after double-digit bass this year as Alligator Gar in the 40+-pound class.

5.      The Spray reel is affordable. For a fly reel that is capable in fresh and saltwater, it is competitively priced.

6.       It comes in two different color combinations. Burn/Steel and Electric Blue/Gold. Both are sharp-looking.

Cons:

1.      It doesn’t come in a green and black color combination like the Launch 325.

Conclusion

If you are in the market for a new flyfishing reel. I highly recommend the Spray fly reel. Whether you are primarily a freshwater or saltwater fly fisherman the Spray reel comes in a size to suit your needs. It is tough, lightweight, and has a fully sealed Gasket drag system that will stop any fish you chase after. It is an award-winning fly reel at an affordable price. I have been thoroughly impressed with its capabilities.
