Gear Review: Coleman Triton

Overview

Coleman got its start over 120 years ago when they were the first to make a portable propane lantern. An interesting fact those stoves went behind enemy lines with paratroopers in WWII. Over the years they have expanded their outdoor offerings to tents, sleeping bags, and more. I am most familiar with their camp stoves and lanterns. I remember many campouts with the Boy Scouts where both were used. I know many people who still have their grandfather's Coleman stove. They last forever. This is why when I got a camp stove for our family camping trip I went with a Coleman.

Specs Coleman Triton

Pros:

·       While not for backpacking it is lightweight for drive-in camping.

·       Can be used with a 20-pound propane tank with 1 Ib to 20 Ib propane adaptor hose for longer camping trips

·       60-minute cook time on high

·       Easy to clean.

Cons

·       It is not suitable for cooking for long periods without the 1 Ib to 20 Ib propane adaptor hose

·       Does not come with a burner ignitor. Pro Tip: Flint and steel work in a pinch if you forget your light like I have before.

·       Despite built-in wind guards the wind can increase your cooking time.

The biggest con is the cost of the 1Ib propane bottles that you would typically use on a Coleman camp stove. A 3-pack of propane bottles will run 30$. When cooking for a big group that will give you about three hours of cooking time.

There are a couple of ways around this one that I mentioned before. Get the 1 Ib to 20 Ib propane adaptor hose and use a 20 Ib propane tank like you would for the grill. If you are like me and are only cooking for a family of 3 you may want to stick with the 1 Ib propane bottles. Check your local Tractor Supply for Propane refill locations. Not a propane exchange but a refill location. It is like pumping gas and you can refill your 20 Ib propane bottle for cheaper than exchanging it. With the right adaptor (linked here) you can refill those 1 Ib bottles rather than buying new ones.

Conclusion

I would recommend the Coleman Triton camp stove to anyone who is looking to get a family camp stove that will last a lifetime. It's affordable and portable. With the hose adaptors, it is adaptable to either a big party or a small group of campers.
